Objectives:
Approach:
The course is organized in four major segments with a specific progression.
- The first segment is an introduction to the nature of software project management, the identification of software products, and requirements elicitation techniques.
- The second deals with estimating the time and effort required to complete a software project --- information necessary for scheduling, staffing and budgeting.
- The third segment presents additional considerations that need analysis prior to making a final plan, and also details the contents of a project plan.
- The last segment considers issues in managing the software development process during the execution of the plan.
Contents:
There are two exams, one roughly halfway through the course and the other at the end. These exams will consist of multiple choice and/or essay questions and will constitute 30% of the final grade.
The primary out-of-class assignment is the writing of a software development project plan for a product. The requirements for the product will be provided. Several small assignments during the first half of the course will develop information needed to complete the plan. Other small assignments will help in achieving other objectives of individual knowledge units. The assignments are listed in the schedule below. These assignments will constitute 60% of the final grade.
The remaining 10% of the final grade will be an evaluation of the quality of individual contributions to class discussion and the understanding of the readings.
